Paul Günther Klein (born October 23, 1919 in Schäßburg , Romania ; † March 20, 1998 in Mainz ) was a German physician , microbiologist and immunologist .

Life

He spent his early childhood with his three siblings, including the later Bishop Albert Klein , in Schäßburg. In 1924 the family moved to Sibiu , the hometown of their father, who had received a position at the regional church teachers' college. From 1938 Klein studied medicine in Klausenburg , Tübingen and at the University of Heidelberg , where he received his doctorate in 1949 ( On the effect of some redox indicators on the activity of cholinesterase , 1947). He then worked at the Institute for Pathology at the University of Karlsruhe with Richard Böhmig (1898–1972) and at the Institute for Hygiene at the Medical Academy in Düsseldorf with Walter Kikuth (1896–1968). He began there to deal with the complement system, which he deepened during a stay at Cornell University . In 1961 he became professor of hygiene at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz , which he was able to convert into a professorship for medical microbiology, but he also pursued further research in immunology. He was director of the Institute for Medical Microbiology in Mainz. In 1990 he retired.

In 1965 he showed that the third component C3 of the complement system consists of five proteins. In 1994 Klein received the Robert Koch Medal . A well-known pupil of Klein is the infection biologist Stefan HE Kaufmann , who Klein called "a charismatic teacher and mentor that is seldom found".

He is not to be confused with the American pathologist and immunologist Paul A. Klein (professor at the University of Florida ).
