Paul Lazarus (medic)

Paul Lazarus (born October 14, 1873 in Chernivtsi ; † October 6, 1957 in Locarno ) was a German radiologist who worked in Berlin from 1901 to 1936 .

life and work

Paul Lazarus came from a family of Austrian doctors and studied at the universities of Heidelberg , Berlin and Vienna , where he received his doctorate in 1897 . From 1901 he worked at the Charité in Berlin and wrote during this time with the head of the department, Ernst von Leyden , papers on myelitis and radiology of the spine. In 1903 Lazarus completed his habilitation and was appointed professor in 1907. From 1907 to 1930 he was chief physician at the St. Marien Hospital in Berlin and then at the St. Antonius Hospital.

He also taught at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität , the Berlin University. In 1913 the first edition of the handbook of radium biology and therapy he edited appeared . The second edition appeared in two volumes in 1928/31. In addition to being the editor of this manual, Lazarus has authored over a hundred scientific papers. After the “ seizure of power ” by the National Socialists , his license to teach at the university was revoked in 1933. Lazarus continued to work at the St. Antonius Hospital in Berlin until 1936 (but no longer in a managerial position) and then fled to Switzerland with his family. In Friborg he worked for a few years as chief physician for radiation oncology.
