Paul Manneville (born December 6, 1946 in Bar-le-Duc ) is a French physicist who deals with hydrodynamics and nonlinear dynamics ( chaos theory ).

Manneville went to school in Tannois , attended the Lycée Raymond Poincaré in Bar-le-Duc from 1957 and the Lycée Henri Poincaré in Nancy from 1964 , studied at the Ecole Centrale des Arts et Manufactures from 1966, graduating as an engineer in 1969 (DEA) and received her PhD in physics in 1977 from the University of Paris-Süd in Orsay. From 1970 to 1992 he worked at the French nuclear research center in Saclay (laboratory for solid state physics) and is research director of the CNRS at the hydrodynamics laboratory (LadHyX) of the École polytechnique , where he was from 1992. In 2012 he retired. He lives in Angers

He is known for his pioneering work with Yves Pomeau at the end of the 1970s on intermittency, for example in the transition to turbulence in hydrodynamics , especially with Rayleigh-Bénard convection . He also dealt with instabilities and pattern formation in liquid crystals, with spatio-temporal chaos and with the laminar-turbulent transition in wall shear currents and in thin films.

In 1988 he received the Paul Langevin Prize .

He was Associate Editor of the Journal of Physics A, Journal of Fluid Mechanics, and Physical Review E.

He is married and has four kids.
