Paul Naschy

Paul Naschy (born September 6, 1934 in Madrid ; † November 30, 2009 there ; actually Jacinto Molina Álvarez ) was a Spanish actor , screenwriter and film director .

Life

Growing up in the Franco regime in the post-war years, Naschy initially studied agriculture and later architecture at the request of his family , whereby his drawing skills, which he developed early on, were of great use to him. They also led him to design covers for record companies such as Decca and Columbia , including for Elvis Presley recordings. Naschy also drew comics and wrote penny novels under the pseudonym Jack Mills .

During these years he found a balance in the sporting field; he was a boxer, footballer and finally a weightlifter - in 1958 he became the Spanish lightweight champion.

Career

His love for cinema, which was pronounced at an early age, prevailed from the early 1960s. He took on small roles, was a location scout and production and assistant director until he played his first leading role in 1967 and a year later found the role of his life with his first horror film : that of the werewolf Waldemar Daninsky, whom he embodied in many films. He also played other classic horror roles such as Count Dracula or Frankenstein's monster , but also in many crime films .

In 1976 he also switched to the director's chair , where he shot not only his feature films but also documentaries . At the beginning of the 1990s things got quieter around Naschy, until he was featured in a number of more recent projects at the beginning of the new millennium (including the presentation of the Spanish gold medal for fine arts ). Naschy has appeared in almost 90 films, but is mainly known for his films from the 1960s to the 1980s.

Paul Naschy is the only actor who has portrayed all of the classic horror characters: Dracula, Frankenstein's monster, the mummy , Fu Man Chu , Mr. Hyde , Quasimodo , the phantom of the opera , the wolf man and Satan . He last lived in his hometown of Madrid, where he died on November 30, 2009. Naschy suffered from pancreatic cancer.
