Paul Otto (sculptor)
Paul Martin Otto (born August 3, 1846 in Berlin ; † April 7, 1893 there ) was a German sculptor .
Life
Paul Martin Emil Otto was the son of the accountant Hermann Otto (1800–1875) from Demmin and his wife Lida Fouquet from Cörlin. He trained at the Berlin Art Academy and joined the naturalistic direction of Reinhold Begas . In 1871 he became a member of the Berlin Artists' Association . After he had made his debut at the art exhibition in 1872 with a group: Faun und Nymph , he won a prize in the competition for a planned Wilhelm von Tegetthoff monument in 1873 , which enabled him to travel to Italy , where he received scholarships and supported several orders until resided in Rome in 1885. In the competition for a Luther memorial for Berlin, he received the first prize and the order to carry it out.
His portraits are characterized by fine characteristics and virtuoso marble technique, while his larger works have a strongly painterly character that goes beyond the limits of sculpture. In 1886 he moved to Berlin, where, among other things, he made a statue of Daniel Chodowiecki for the Altes Museum . Paul Otto was a royal professor.
Paul Otto was buried in the St. Jacobi Cemetery in Berlin-Neukölln . The grave was cleared in 1929, and the gravestone with Hugo Lederer's plaque was put up again nearby .
