Paul Panzer (actor)

Paul W. Panzer , real name Paul Wolfgang Panzerbeiter , (born November 3, 1872 in Würzburg , German Reich ; † August 16, 1958 in Los Angeles , USA ) was a German actor who starred in almost 400 American films between 1905 and 1952.

Life

Paul Panzer, who was born in Würzburg, emigrated to the United States as a young man and stayed there all his life. He first worked as a set designer and theater painter before he became an actor himself. He made his film debut in 1905, and by 1952 almost 400 films should follow. Perhaps his most significant role was as the hypocritical villain in the 1914 silent film series The Perils of Pauline . After this film, he played mostly villain roles for the rest of his career. In 1912 he directed The Life of Buffalo Bill , starring the real Buffalo Bill . With the introduction of the sound film at the end of the 1920s, because of his German accent, he mostly had to be content with smaller supporting roles not mentioned in the credits . In later years he played small roles in classic films such as Frankenstein , Unter Piratenflagge , Casablanca, and A Foreign Affair .

He was married to the American actress Josephine Atkinson (1882-1954) and they had two children. Paul Panzer died in Los Angeles in 1958 at the age of 85. The music group Ton Steine ​​Scherben used his name in their songs "Paul-Panzer-Blues" and "Guten Morgen" for a fictional factory worker who, sandwiched between work and social convention, only plays a minor role in his own life.
