The Burga Monoplane was a two-seat aircraft made by the English manufacturer Avro .

General

In 1912 the Avro company received an order from a Peruvian lieutenant Burga to build an airplane. This machine should be based on a design from Burgas. Burga chose Avro because the company was very advanced in the field of aircraft control at the time.

Since Avro was currently building the prototype of the Type E, the forerunner of the Avro 500 , parts were used in the construction of the Burga Monoplane that were also used in the Type E: wing, tail area (elevator and rudder) and the landing gear . The fuselage was specially developed for Burgas aircraft, however, it was much narrower than the Type E fuselage. The built-in engine was a Gnome with an output of about 37.3 kW (50.7 hp).

The rudder controls on this machine were unusual; In addition to the usual rudder on the tail fin, there were two rudders, one above and one below the fuselage, immediately in front of the cockpit, which deflected in opposite directions.

The construction of the aircraft was a low priority at Avro; work was only done on the machine in between when work on the other machines allowed. The construction was not completed until June 1912, work on the engine was carried out in July and the aircraft did not leave the Avro workshop until October 15, 1912.

After the maiden flight in Shoreham on November 20, 1912, the test pilot noted that the machine was fast and had good climbing characteristics. The aircraft completed a few more test flights. When she had an accident on one of these flights on December 12th, she was brought back to the Avro workshop for repairs. After that, nothing more was heard from this aircraft.

construction

The Burga monoplane was a wooden structure covered with fabric. The landing gear consisted of a 2-wheeled main landing gear with a centered ski and a tail spur.

Technical specifications

Except for the length of 8.85 m, no further technical data of this aircraft are known.
