The Avro 584 Avocet was a single-engine maritime fighter aircraft from the British manufacturer Avro , built on the basis of a tender by the British Aviation Department .

history

It was a einstieligen biplane with an all-metal hull, powered by a 180 hp (134.23 kW / 182.5 hp) paid 7-cylinder - radial engine Armstrong Siddeley Lynx IV , who worked on a metal propeller. The machine should also be used as a deck aircraft; It did not have any folding wings, but the surfaces could be dismantled in a few simple steps. Therefore, the surfaces were not braced, but provided with stable struts. Ailerons were only attached to the upper surfaces.

The Avocet could be equipped with both a double float and a wheeled undercarriage, making it suitable for rolling starts and catapult starts from the deck of a ship. As armament, two Vickers machine guns were provided, which should fire attached to the wing through the propeller circle. Only two prototypes were built - the first, equipped with a wheeled undercarriage, had its first flight in December 1927, the second, with double floats, in April 1928. Since the flight performance of these machines fell short of expectations, the order from Avro was not received .

In June 1928 the second machine was also fitted with a wheeled landing gear, and in February 1929 both aircraft were made available to the Fleet Air Arm in Martlesham . In September 1929, the second machine was converted back to the float version, after which it was used in Calshot pilots who were to take part in the Schneider Trophy as a training aircraft for water take-off and landing exercises.
