The Avro 523 Pike is a twin-engine biplane - airplane of the British manufacturer Avro .
history
The development of this aircraft was based on requirements from both the British Navy and the Flying Corps .
The intended purposes of this machine, which was relatively large for the time (the first twin-engine aircraft from Avro), of which only two copies were manufactured in 1916, were the fight against enemy airships , long-range reconnaissance and short-range bombing missions. The first flight of the first machine - called the 523A - took place in November 1916.
This aircraft was originally equipped with pusher propellers, but was converted to operate with pull propellers and started in this version in February 1917.
The second aircraft - now called the 523 - was identical to the previous aircraft , but equipped with 160 hp Sunbeam Nubian engines and water-cooled 8-cylinder V-90 units.
The crew of the Avro 523 Pike should consist of a pilot and a bow and stern gunner.
However, since technology in the aircraft sector was advancing very quickly at that time, the 523 was already overtaken by more advanced aircraft types at the end of its development period and there was no series production and no military use.
