The Avro 528 Silver King is a single-engine, biplane aircraft produced by the British manufacturer Avro .

history

The 528 was a further development of the Avro 519 bomber. In September 1915, the British Admiralty ordered this aircraft from Avro; the first tests were to take place in 1916.

However, the development work at Avro was delayed, so that the machine could not be completed until September 9, 1916. However, it turned out that the 528 was flawed in manufacturing and also had significant engine problems. The production defects were corrected by December 1916, the engine problems persisted, and the engine manufacturer Sunbeam was unable to remedy the situation.

Experiments with different propellers followed, and it was not until February 1917 that a solution to the problem appeared to be close. However, this was too late for the Admiralty, who told Avro that they would not put this aircraft into service under any circumstances.

So it stayed with the one-off Avro 528, which was ultimately flown by British naval aviators for test purposes and was last seen in April 1917.
