The Avro 508 was the project of a two-seater biplane reconnaissance aircraft from the British manufacturer Avro .
history
In the hope of an order for a series production, Avro constructed an aircraft with a pusher propeller in 1914 , designed as a reconnaissance aircraft with a cockpit for the observer in the bow of the machine and space for the pilot in the area of the wings.
However, since the British Air Force showed no interest in the 508 after the aircraft had been inspected for the first time, a single prototype was built , which was only presented to the public twice. The bare cell was first shown at an exhibition in Manchester in January 1914 ; the fully assembled aircraft was presented at the Olympia Aero Show in London in March of the same year .
At the end of April 1915, the first flight took place in Brooklands. Due to the lack of an order, the machine was handed over to a flight school in Hendon shortly afterwards . However, it was not used there for long. According to eyewitness reports, it was already dismantled in April 1916 and parked without an engine. Allegedly, the 508 should be equipped with a double control as a training machine. It is doubtful whether she ever flown in this configuration.
construction
The Avro 508 was a three-stemmed biplane. The hull consisted of a wooden frame construction, which was only covered with fabric in the bow area. The wings were of equal length at the top and bottom and consisted of a wooden structure covered with fabric. All four surfaces were equipped with ailerons.
