development

In March 1914 Avro presented a prototype of this machine to the public at the Olympia Aero Show in London / England .

The 511 was designed as a fast reconnaissance aircraft . The Avro designer H. E. Broadsmith deliberately kept the design of this aircraft light in order to make it easy to disassemble and transport the machine; The dimensions of the 511 were correspondingly small.

The design of this unique piece was very advanced for the time, so all four wings had ailerons and an early form of landing flaps on the lower surface. The 511 was so stable that, for example, the landing speed of the machine was below 60 km / h.

In May 1914, the aircraft was converted and given the designation Avro 514 .
