The Avro 624 Six was a three-engine passenger aircraft made by the British manufacturer Avro in the 1930s.
history
After the success of the Avro 618 Ten , Avro decided to build a similar aircraft that was smaller than the Ten , but slightly larger than the Avro 619 Five .
Based on the conception of the Five , a machine was designed in which two pilots had space next to each other in the cockpit (the machine had double controls as standard) and which should offer more comfort for the four passengers. This gave them more headroom and there was also a washroom in the back of the aircraft.
The first prototype with the registration G-AAYR was first spotted in May 1930 during intensive flight tests in Woodford and Heston . After these tests, minor changes were made to the second machine. So the outer engines were built into suspensions so that they were then about mid-fuselage height; on the first machine, the motors were still integrated into the wings. In addition, the originally one-piece cockpit window was divided and bevelled to better drain away raindrops.
After a demonstration of this machine at the end of 1931, it was sold to the Chinese Far East Aviation Ltd. sold.
A third Six was created in 1933 through the conversion of an Avro 619 Five as a so-called "flying classroom" for navigator training for the private company Air Service Training Ltd. , the machine was in the first days of the Second World War by the No. 11 Air Observers Navigation School taken over.
No other machines of this type were built.
construction
The Avro 624 Six was a high- wing aircraft , the wing was planked with plywood . The fuselage consisted of a fabric-covered tubular steel construction. One of the three engines was built into the nose of the fuselage, the other two engines were in the wings of the first prototype, and the outer engines of the following machines were attached to suspensions under the wings. The non-retractable landing gear consisted of a spring-loaded two-wheeled main landing gear and a rigid tail spur.
