The Avro 679 Manchester was a twin-engine bomber of World War II from British production.

history

The first flight took place in July 1939. The AV Roe and Company built only 20 of the original Manchester Mk I; This was followed by the Manchester Mk IA with larger vertical stabilizer surfaces and an increased stabilizer span from 6.71 m to 10.06 m. The total production amounted to 200 copies, which were in service from November 1940 to mid-1942. The Manchester proved to be a failure in action, the fault not being in the airframe, but in the drive. The four-engine further development Manchester Mk III led from the beginning of 1941 to the far more powerful Avro Lancaster bomber .
