The Avro 619 Five was a three-engine passenger aircraft produced by the British manufacturer Avro .
history
At the "Olympia Aero Show" in London in July 1929, Avro presented parallel to the 618 Ten with the Avro 619, a smaller variant that had been developed by Avro chief designer Roy Chadwick and his team. Since this aircraft had a capacity of four passengers, i.e. could transport a total of five people together with the pilot, it was named 619 Five .
At the exhibition in London, a buyer was found for the machine equipped with three Armstrong-Siddeley-Genet-Major engines - Wilson Airways Ltd. in Nairobi. After a slight modification according to the buyer's wishes, the aircraft was transferred to Kenya in October 1929 and flew there under the name "King of the Grail". Another 619 Five called "Knight Errant" was bought by the same customer in February 1930.
The third five was after Australia to Queensland Air Navigation Co. Ltd. which had already been commissioned by the Avro 618 Tens .
The fourth and last model built remained with Avro as a demonstration machine and was used in the King's Cup Race 1930. However, when it became apparent shortly after the start that the 619 was not suitable for such operations, the machine was withdrawn from the race.
Since Wilson Airways wanted to replace the "King of the Grail", it received the former demonstration model. This machine was destroyed in a crash landing on January 18, 1932.
construction
The Avro 619 Five was a high-wing aircraft with plywood-clad wings. The fuselage consisted of a fabric-covered tubular steel construction. One of the three engines was built into the nose of the fuselage, the two external engines were attached to suspensions under the wings. The non-retractable landing gear consisted of a spring-loaded two-wheeled main landing gear and a rigid tail spur.
Project Avro 628
A project based on the structure of the Avro 619 called Avro 628 for use as a mail plane , equipped with a single Armstrong-Siddeley-Panther engine in the fuselage nose, was probably already at the design stage.
