The Urnäsch is a river in the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden in Switzerland .

It rises on the Schwägalp at approx. 1281  m above sea level. M. in Hungbüel at the foot of the Säntis . While still on the Schwägalp, it joins the Tosbach before flowing through the municipality of Urnäsch . It lies deeply between Hundwil and Waldstatt in the Hundwilertobel , where it is crossed by the 90 m high Hundwilertobel Bridge with a 143 m span and 269 m length, and near the border with Stein by the old, covered wooden bridge Hundwil ("speaking bridge").

The Urnäsch continues to flow northwards as a border river between the communities of Stein and Herisau in the Appenzell hinterland . It flows into the hamlet of Kubel (Stein) on the border with the canton of St. Gallen , at 588  m above sea level. M. in the sitter . Interestingly enough, the bridge in Kubel is a second "speaking bridge" that crosses the river. This is built in a similar manner to the upper one near Hundwil.

The Urnäsch is 23.5 km long from the source to the confluence with the Sitter.
