action

On the day of John Willis' wedding, the psychiatrist Dr. Harry Blair at Willis's estate and asks for a one-on-one talk with the groom. In it, he reveals to Willis that his bride, Nancy, is Blair's mentally unstable ex-wife, who has already ruined the lives of several other men.

In a series of complex, intricate flashbacks, Blair tells the story of Nancy: As the daughter of a domestic servant, she was innocently accused of stealing a precious medallion by her mother's employer as a little girl. Severely traumatized by this, Nancy became a kleptomaniac and compulsive liar. Presumably she is even the real perpetrator in a murder case for which a likely innocent person was executed. Feeling guilty about not having made a statement to prevent the execution, Nancy's ex-boyfriend Norman Clyde committed suicide.

Willis refuses to believe Blair's story and sends him away. When Nancy then changes clothes for the wedding ceremony, her future mother-in-law comes into the room. It turns out that this is the former employer of Nancy's mother. Without being aware of Nancy's true identity, she gives her the fateful locket as a wedding present. Overwhelmed by the memories this conjures up, Nancy suffers a nervous breakdown when the bride moves in. Now completely insane, she is sent to a sanatorium.
