Laraine Day , real name La Raine Johnson (born October 13, 1920 in Roosevelt , Utah , † November 10, 2007 in Ivins , Utah), was an American actress and television presenter.

life and career

Laraine Day came from a prominent Mormon family and had a twin brother. After her family moved to Long Beach , Day began acting. Your first stop was the Long Beach Players . She gave her film debut in 1937 in a small supporting role in the film Stella Dallas by King Vidor . In 1938 her roles, mostly in Westerns by George O'Brien , got bigger and in 1939 she began to take on bigger lead roles at MGM . Her first major films included Sergeant Madden by director Josef von Sternberg . Her best-known role, that of the nurse Mary Lamont, began that same year. It belonged to the series of films about Dr. Kildare . By 1941 she played the role on the side of Lew Ayres in seven films. After that, she left the series to embark on a larger, independent film career. As early as 1940 she had an important role in Alfred Hitchcock's The Foreign Correspondent . But her film career did not go as desired and apart from a few detours to film until 1960, her cinema career ended after 1949. After separating from the Doctor Kildare series, she did not get roles in major films, but mostly only in medium-sized films Budget.

In 1942 Day married the musician Ray Hendricks , from whom they separated again in 1947 to marry the former baseball star and then coach Leo Durocher . The couple stayed together until 1960 and had two children. Day developed a special liking for baseball and even published a book on the subject, which is why she was nicknamed The First Lady of Baseball . Since 1951, Day began a second career in television, which was beginning its triumphant advance in the United States at that time. Her program Daydreaming with Laraine was one of the first talk shows on US television. In addition, she appeared repeatedly in guest roles in television series until the mid-1980s, including Lou Grant , Love Boat and Fantasy Island . In 1960, Day married a third time. The marriage, which lasted until her death, produced two more children.

Day was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her achievements . She was an active member of her church until her death. Politically, she was an avowed Republican , a member of the Motion Picture Alliance for the Preservation of American Ideals and a supporter of Ronald Reagan and Richard Nixon , whom she supported in his presidential candidacy in 1960 .
