Paul Poincy
Paul E. Poincy (born March 11, 1833 in New Orleans , † November 14, 1909 there ) was an American painter and art teacher.
Life
Paul Poincy was born a Creole in New Orleans in 1833 . He came from an educated, wealthy family of French descent.
As a child, Poincy attended Jesuit schools in Grand Coteau , Louisiana , and St. Louis . From around 1852 to 1858 he studied in Paris at the École des Beaux-Arts , with Gleyre , Cogniet and Rodolphe Julian . In January 1859 he came to his hometown and opened a studio with Richard Clague . After the outbreak of the Civil War, he served in the Confederate States Army . Then he returned to New Orleans and worked as a painter again. He was one of the initiators of the Southern Art Union, founded in 1880. In 1885 he founded the New Orleans Artists' Association with Bror A. Wikstrom, Andres Molinary and Achille Peretti, an organization that held annual exhibitions until 1905 and maintained an art school at which Poincy taught. He was a member of the selection jury for the Tennessee Centennial Exposition (1897).

Paul Poincy mainly painted portraits (especially of children), landscape and genre pictures with motifs from New Orleans and religious representations. Much of his work has been exhibited in churches and public buildings in New Orleans. One of his best-known works is the large-scale painting Volunteer Firemen's Parade , which he created in 1872 together with Victor Pierson . Several paintings by Paul Poincy are in the possession of the Louisiana State Museum.
