Paul Rutherford (singer)

Paul Rutherford (born December 8, 1959 in Liverpool , England ) is a British pop singer . He became known in the mid-1980s as a background singer and dancer for the band Frankie Goes to Hollywood .

Life

Born in Liverpool , Rutherford later moved to Cantril Farm (currently Stockbridge Village). He appeared in the Merseyside punk scene in the 1970s, collecting his first hits with The Spitfire Boys of Saint Helen . He was then recruited along with Peter Gill , Jed O'Toole and Brian Nash by Holly Johnson , then singer with Big in Japan , for his new group Frankie Goes to Hollywood . Johnson was the lead singer while Paul acted as the accompanist and dancer. At the time, it was rumored that the two, the only homosexual members of the group, were in a relationship. After the first appearances in the Liverpool area (and the switch between Jed O'Toole and his brother Mark O'Toole ) the band achieved success with the single Relax , thanks to a mixture of skill, commercialism and ambiguity. After the initial censorship, Frankie Goes to Hollywood achieved great success and dominated the British charts in 1984. They brought three singles to first place, which had only previously been achieved by Gerry & the Pacemakers in 1964.

Two years later, in 1986, Holly Johnson decided to pursue his solo career further and Frankie Goes to Hollywood broke up. Rutherford also started a solo career, but with less success than Johnson. The 1988 single Get Real with acid house elements was very successful in the clubs, and in 1989 the album Oh World followed , from which two more singles were released. All three singles were produced by ABC . In 1990 Rutherford collaborated with the band Pressure Zone by singing in That Moon .

After relocating to Waiheke Island , New Zealand with his partner , he returned to Hollywood with Frankie Goes in 2004 , where, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Trevor Horn's professional career, he sat with Ryan Molloy in place of Holly Johnson and Jed O'Toole in place of Brian Nash got together for a special concert at Wembley . With the same cast, the group went on tour in 2005. To avoid litigation with Holly Johnson over the name Frankie Goes to Hollywood , Rutherford founded Forbidden Hollywood in 2007 with Gill, J. O'Toole and Molloy . That same year, just before a new tour, Molloy left the group and Forbidden Hollywood broke up. At the end of 2010 Rutherford released the album The Cowboy Years under the name Paul Rutherford / Butt Cowboys . In 2011 Rutherford made a name for itself again with a new edition of Oh World and a collaboration on the new album Combined by the German singer Claudia Brücken .
