career

Until 1950: Union Oberschöneweide

Salisch began his career in the youth of SC Union Oberschöneweide , where he also made the leap into the first men's team that played in the Gauliga Berlin-Brandenburg . In the 1939/40 season he and his teammates won the Gau championship after two play-offs against Blau-Weiß 90 Berlin and thus made it to the final round of the 1940 German soccer championship. The team around center runner Herbert Raddatz prevailed in the group games against VfB Königsberg and VfL Stettin and then played in two qualifying games against SK Rapid Wien in June . Vienna's center forward Franz Binder single-handedly decided the second leg for Rapid with three goals and the final round was over for the men from Wuhlheide. The all-round striker Salisch, who most frequently occupied the position of the half-forward, played all six games and scored six goals.

After that, the “locksmith boys” , as the Unioners were nicknamed, had less success and were briefly relegated from the Gauliga. However, these years were overshadowed by the Second World War , which also had consequences for Salisch. It was not until 1949 that he was released from captivity . Shortly thereafter, "Mungo", as his nickname, joined the Unionern, who were now playing in the Berlin City League , during the 1949/50 season . He completed 14 of 22 round games for the team trained by Johannes Sobek and was also active in the two qualifying games on May 14 and 17, 1950 to determine the Berlin runner-up for the final round against the Berliner SV 92 . Union won both games and was thus qualified for the finals.

1950–1955: SC Union 06 Berlin

However, the German Sports Committee of the newly formed had GDR the East Berliners prohibited from the time appointed in Kiel match against Hamburger SV to compete. A large part of the Unioner team ignored it and went to Kiel on May 28, 1950 to play against HSV, which was lost with 7-0 goals. The split-off team of the Berlin runners-up moved to West Berlin , founded the SC Union 06 Berlin on June 9th and adopted the statute for contract players for the 1950/51 round. In this phase Union also lost the semi-final match in the Berlin Cup against the champions Tennis Borussia on June 14th with 0-2 goals.

In 1951 and 1952, Salisch and his teammates from the Union repeated twice more to win the runner-up in Berlin. Personally, the 32-year-old “Mungo” Salisch won the top scorer's crown in 1951 with 29 goals in front of the TeBe shooters Hans Berndt and Horst Schmutzler . In the 4-0 success on December 31, 1950 against Blau-Weiß 90 Berlin, the striker distinguished himself as a four-time goalscorer. When Berlin played the first international post-war city game in front of 90,000 spectators in the Olympic Stadium against Zurich on February 11, 1951, Salisch stormed in the attack alongside Erwin Wax , Berndt, Schmutzler and Fritz Wilde . In the 30th minute he brought the Berliners 1-0 lead. Alfred Bickel was responsible for the two Swiss hits to make it 2-2. To win the title in the 1952/53 season, Salisch was able to contribute five more goals in thirteen inserts. In the final round, the veteran in the games against VfB Stuttgart, Borussia Dortmund and Hamburger SV was part of the regular Union.

At the age of 36, Paul Salisch played his last game in the Berlin city league on May 1, 1955 in a 4-1 home defeat against Wacker 04 Berlin . From 1950 to 1955 he is listed in the statistics with 83 city league appearances and 49 goals.
