Paul Samson-Körner (born November 13, 1887 in Zwickau ; † August 25, 1942 ) was a top-class German boxer and actor.
Life
Paul Körner, who later adopted the "stage name" Samson , emigrated from Zwickau to the USA in 1908. There he stepped a ring u. Stemmclub and started boxing in 1909. Under the pseudonym Jim Smith he started out as a professional in smaller New York boxing rings to earn money, but at the same time ran an engineering training. 1912/13 he stayed in Panama and also completed professional fights there. Back in New York in 1914, in Chile in 1915 as an engineer , in New York again in 1917, he boxed wherever he was and in 1917 he was champion of Panama and Central America by defeating Jack Ortega. From 1917 he was a popular sparring partner in the USA for famous boxing greats like Jack Johnson , Jess Willard , Jack Dempsey and Georges Carpentier .
But he also stood in the ring as a counter-boxer and boxed every opponent who gave him a chance. So he fought in 1919 against Harry Greb and Jack Johnson , USA, in 1920 against Gene Tunney and in 1921 against Tom Gibbons . He didn't win any of these fights, but he always looked good.
In 1922 he returned to Germany and surprisingly won in 1922 against the German heavyweight champion and attack boxer Hans Breitensträter by knocking out in the 9th round. He also knocked Breitensträter in a title fight for the German championship in 1924; In 1925 he lost this title again to Breitenstrater on points.
In 1926 he lost controversially to the new heavyweight hope Franz Diener .
Paul Samson-Körner weighed only about 80 kg and was 1.80 m tall. So he was actually a light heavyweight, but he fearlessly took on the toughest opponents and showed a lot of heart and courage in all his fights.
In 1927 he fought his last fight against Rudi Wagener in Dortmund . His fight record is 67 fights with 40 wins, with his early fights in New York and Central America having no record.
After his boxer career, he became a film actor. For example, in 1935 he made the film “Knock Out” together with Max Schmeling and Anny Ondra .
On August 25, 1942, Paul Samson-Körner was killed in a traffic accident.
