Franz Diener (born June 2, 1901 in Bibra , † April 21, 1969 in Berlin ) was a German heavyweight boxer trained by Sabri Mahir .

Career

Servant important boxing matches, including the Berlin Sports Palace and in Madison Square Garden , found in the second half of the 20s of the 20th century instead.

He became German heavyweight champion in 1926 by winning points over 15 rounds against Paul Samson-Körner ; this title was withdrawn from him. In 1927 he was able to win the title again in a fight over 15 rounds against Rudi Wagener , which he also won by winning the points. On April 4, 1928, Diener lost the championship title by losing points to Max Schmeling . Diener's nickname "The German Oak" became a colloquial term.

After the sports career

After 1945 the trained butcher lived and worked in his hometown Bad Bibra and built a sausage and meat factory. Diener also ran the local swimming pool restaurant as an innkeeper until 1954.

Diener was arrested and imprisoned in 1951 for alleged "economic crimes" - a state charge that was often used by the authorities during the GDR period because it was seldom refutable. In 1954 he moved to West Berlin.

From 1954, Diener ran the “Tattersall” restaurant there for fifteen years until his death, an artist's bar in Grolmannstrasse, near Savignyplatz , which still exists today and which he renamed “Franz Diener”. His regular guests included celebrities such as Hans Albers , Romy Schneider , Robert Biberti from the Comedian Harmonists and Harald Juhnke .

Franz Diener died in Berlin in 1969 at the age of 67. He was buried in the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Cemetery in Westend . The grave has not been preserved.
