Paul Scherman

Paul Isidor Scherman (born September 12, 1907 in Toronto ; † March 12, 1996 there ) was a Canadian violinist and conductor.

Scherman grew up in London until 1920, where he had lessons from Leon Bergman and Hans Wessely at the Royal Academy of Music . On his return to Toronto he studied violin at the Royal Conservatory of Music with Luigi von Kunits and took private lessons in music theory with Louis Waizman . He later studied with Albert Maieff in New York (1927–30), William Primrose in Toronto and London (1937–39), Demetrius Constantine Dounis in New York (1946–47) and Nadia Boulanger in Paris (1955–57).

Between 1923 and 1926 Scherman performed as a soloist in Ontario and made his broadcast debut with the CFCA Toronto in 1925. He also played in various theater and radio orchestras and was a member of the New Symphony Orchestra between 1925 and 1927 under the direction of Luigi von Kunits.

From 1932 to 1952 Scherman was a violinist in the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO), with whom he occasionally appeared as a soloist, until 1944 under the name Isidor Scherman. In 1947 he made his debut as conductor of the TSO and was its deputy conductor until 1955. He also conducted various orchestras for programs of the CBC , including The Northern Electric Hour and (under the name Don Miguel ) Latin American Serenade . As one of the conductors of the CBC Symphony Orchestra , he directed the 1955 performance of Igor Stravinski's Histoire du soldat at the Stratford Festival . As a violin soloist he took part in the Casals Festivals in 1950, 1951 and 1953 in Prades.

After engagements with the BBC Scottish Orchestra and the Vienna Radio Orchestra (1955) and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra (1956), he was a member of the Royal Symphony Orchestra in London from 1958 to 1960 . He then worked as a freelancer and took part in various studio recordings, including as a violinist in the song Within You Without You on the Beatles album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band . From the 1980s he lived in Toronto again. As the conductor of the Startime Orchestra, Scherman worked on an album for CBC Records with Glenn Gould , in the NFB film Rehearsal he conducted a performance of a composition by Harry Somers .
