Hans Wessely

Hans Wessely (born December 23, 1862 in Vienna , † September 29, 1926 in Innsbruck ) was an Austrian violinist and music teacher.

Wessely studied violin with Karl Heissler and Joseph Hellmesberger at the Vienna Conservatory from 1873 to 1878 and then took private lessons with Jacob Grün . From 1889 he was a professor at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where Spencer Dyke , Albert Sandler and Paul Scherman were among his students.

In addition to some chamber music works, he wrote a book of etudes for the violin (Comprehensive scale manual for the violin) , which appeared in 1890. From 1901 to 1916 he directed the Wessely String Quartet , which included Spencer Dyke, Ernest Tomlinson (in 1901 initially Lionel Tertis ) and Patterson Parker . As a soloist he has appeared under the direction of conductors such as Hans Richter , August Manns , Henry Wood , Alexander Mackenzie , York Bowen and Arthur Sullivan .
