Carl Heissler
Carl Heissler (born January 18, 1823 in Vienna ; † November 13, 1878 there ) was an Austrian violinist and violist .
Life
Carl Heissler received his training from Georg Hellmesberger senior , Matthias Durst and Joseph Böhm at the Conservatory of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna . In 1841 he entered the service of the court opera orchestra and from 1843 also played in the Vienna court music band , first as a substitute, and from 1860 as a full member. From 1849 he played second violin in the Leopold Jansas quartet . Josef Hellmesberger, a son of his professor, also founded a quartet for which he recruited Jansa's musicians, including Carl Heissler. He named the new Ensemble Hellmesberger Quartet .
Heissler taught at the Conservatory of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde; among his students were Ernst Reiterer , Julius Winkler , Arnold Rosé , Hans Wessely , Eugen Grünberg , Hans Richter and Franz Schalk . In 1869 he became the first director of the orchestra of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna . His successor was Anton Rubinstein in 1871 , who was replaced by Johannes Brahms the following year .
