The Paul Schrader GmbH & Co. KG is a German mail order business based in Bremen .

history

The former frigate captain of the Imperial Navy Paul Schrader founded the tea and coffee mail order company Paul Schrader GmbH & Co. on May 3, 1921 together with the partners Albert Bellstedt and Otto Blendermann . Initially, the company limited itself to mail order with a special range of tea and coffee. In June 1921 the first offer appeared in the form of a one-page price list. It comprised six types of tea and three types of roasted and unroasted coffee as well as cocoa .

In November 1921 you knew all articles and letterhead for the first time with the icon of a Teemännchens that on 1 February 1922 at the German Patent Office was requested. The appearance of the tea man has remained essentially the same since then and is still part of the company logo today. In November 1925, the partner Albert Bellstedt transferred his share to the businessman Theodor Werner Gustav Tiemann, who from then on headed the company as the new managing director after working as a tea trader in China.

In 1926, the range of Paul Schrader & Co. was expanded and in addition to twelve types of tea and eight types of coffee, chocolate and pralines were also sold. In 1939 the company was already trading in over 200 items, but was then no longer allowed to expand because of the prohibition on establishing and expanding the mail order business enacted by the National Socialist government and ceased shipping coffee and tea on September 12, 1939.

At the end of the Second World War, the economic situation of the Bremen mail-order company was very difficult and business stability could only develop again in 1950. For the first time since the end of the war, a price list was published this year, but it was only five pages long and consisted of just 18 articles. In the following decade, the company recovered quickly and recorded growth rates in all relevant company metrics. The list of offers had also increased significantly in 1960 with over 300 articles.

On April 24, 1961, the partner Theodor Tiemann died, to whom the expansion and economic stability of the company were to be ascribed. In January 1962 he was succeeded by Karl Wilhelm Arend Vollers , who was also referred to as the German tea pope in Bremen society and among tea connoisseurs. At Christmas 1969 the range was expanded again. It was presented in a 16-page brochure, which was later referred to as the company's first catalog. The company's range of products grew steadily, so that in the 1970s there was a change from special mail order to full range mail order business. From 1982 jewelry , furniture and books were also increasingly offered . In contrast to universal mail order companies such as Quelle , Otto and neckermann.de , tea was always in the foreground as a product group. Therefore, in addition to the products, cultural information about the countries of origin of the tea varieties and instructions for use for tea preparation have been found in the catalogs since then.

In the 1990s, each catalog sometimes offered up to 3500 articles on over 300 pages. However, in order to concentrate more on the actual core business of tea, the decision was made in 2003 to reduce the range, which has now been slimmed down, by around 1,000 items. In 2005, today's managing director Michael Rolf succeeded Arend Vollers.

distribution

The buyers of the goods from Paul Schrader & Co. are exclusively private customers. The products have been sold since 1970 in four main catalogs that appear annually and are published in winter, spring, summer and autumn. In addition, seasonal catalogs are published for Easter and Christmas.

In addition to mailing catalogs, the company has been selling a more extensive range on the Internet since 2001. A small part of the sales also takes place in the city center of Bremen in the company's traditional shop.

Products

The company's range includes more than 400 types of tea, most of which are house brands. About 70% of sales are generated through its sale. The company also sells coffee , cocoa , honey , jam , pastries , confectionery and non-food products, most of which are externally produced and are only packaged in smaller quantities at Paul Schrader & Co. before they reach the customer.
