Paul Schreckberger

Paul Schreckenberger (born May 5, 1930 in Heidelberg - Handschuhsheim , † August 7, 2009 ) was a German trombonist . Above all, his many years of work in the orchestra of the Bayreuth Festival earned him recognition.

Life

Paul Schreckenberger received his first trombone lessons at the age of 12. At the age of 16 he was engaged in the orchestra of his hometown Heidelberg. In addition to his work at the theater, he played in swing formations in American army clubs. In 1948 he moved to what is now the German State Philharmonic of Rhineland-Palatinate and finally joined the National Theater in Mannheim in 1953 as a solo trombonist .

In 1957 he was invited to the orchestra of the Bayreuth Festival for the first time , to which he was first trombonist until the end of the 1990s. Contrary to the tradition of the time, he played an American-made instrument from the start . When he was asked by trombonist Alfred Jakobs to try out a model of German construction, he is said to have replied: "Yes, if you eat German bananas, I also play German trombones."

In 1978 he was appointed full professor at what is now the University of Music and Performing Arts in Mannheim . Many of his students hold positions in top German orchestras, some are now professors themselves. B. at the music academies in Lübeck , Mannheim , Cologne or Karlsruhe .

Two records were made with students in his class.

Even after his retirement he was still active and regularly took on orchestral services in various orchestras, especially in southern Germany.

Style of play

Paul Schreckenberger's way of playing was characterized by a great sound, a sure sense of style and elegance. His extremely precise pulling technique, his accurate push and his various ways of producing vibrato were helpful here.
