Paul Streeper Helmick (also Paul S. Helmick , born December 11, 1893 in Davenport , Scott County , Iowa , † November 12, 1990 in Columbus City , Louisa County , Iowa) was an American physicist .

Life

Family and education

The Presbyterian baptized Paul Streeper Helmick, son of the lawyer John Miller Helmick (1852-1936) and Mary Ella Helmick (1865-1946), turned to the study of physics at the State University of Iowa after completing compulsory schooling , in 1915 he acquired the academic degree of Bachelor of Arts , 1916 those of a Master of Science , in 1920 he became Ph. D. doctorate .

Paul Streeper Helmick, a staunch supporter of the Republicans , married Dorothy Mae Hanna (1898–1992) on June 16, 1921. The children Ruth Winifred, Lois Hanna, Herbert Hanna and the mathematician Robert Hanna came from this marriage . Paul Streeper Helmick died in November 1990 at the age of 96. He found his final resting place in Columbus City Cemetery.

Professional background

Paul Streeper Helmick served in the last year of World War I and the following year in the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in the Field Artillery of the United States Army . In 1920 Helmick took a position as an instructor in physics at Iowa State University. In 1921 a two-year physics scholarship from the National Research Council led him to Princeton University . He then accepted a professorship and head of the Department of Physics at Drake University in Des Moines . In addition, he was employed there from 1939 to 1942 as coordinator for the Civilian Pilot Training and the War Training Service, in 1964 he retired .

Helmick, one of the leading physicists in the United States in the first half of the 20th century, became a Fellow of the Iowa Academy of Science and a member of the American Physical Society , the American Association of University Professors, the Phi Beta Kappa , the Sigma Xi , the Kappa Phi Kappa and the Gamma Alpha chosen.
