criticism

“At this time [Rococo, AdV] and its people, Paul Wendling found a favor that testifies to cultivated taste. He really shows us something of the soul and is not satisfied with clad any model in the costume of the past. We do not have a masquerade before us, but reality. Sometimes he achieves this through the choice of his colors, sometimes through the application of the same, which is content with hints. He guards against the too-definite and prefers to leave room for doubt. In deliberately working through his color scheme, he strictly adheres to the framework dictated by the choice of his fabrics, conception and brushwork are uniform, no anachronism hurts the eye. On the other hand, he does not enjoy atavisms at all, he does not enter into an ideal competition with any painter of the 18th century. He is a consciously modern artist, he paints something like Willibald Alexis says. A man of our day speaks to us in a way that we know and understand, but what he says and how he says it is so convincing that we like to believe him. Paul Wendling lives up to his reproach not only in painting, but also psychologically, he knows how to increase it to the level of intensity that turns each of his little pictures into a graceful little artistic experience. It pleases the eye and stimulates the imagination. Its lines are soft, the shapes are pale, the colors delicate, the feeling is weighed down with a sentimental note. He is one of those who, out of a gloomy, hopeless present, look around for the 'good old days' and have also found them on screen. Let's follow him into fairytale land and look forward to the piece of beauty he gives us. "
