After attending high school , he trained as a bookseller; Then he traveled through Central Europe. In 1883/84 he did his military service as a one-year volunteer in the 2nd Guard Uhlan Regiment in Berlin.

Publishing and writing activity

During his military service Laverrenz was inspired to write military humor, which he published from 1886. Until 1895 he was a full-time publisher. His income from his writing activities eventually allowed him to work as a freelance writer. The focus of his publications was on depictions of the Imperial Navy and seafaring. Obviously out of this interest he was also a member of the German-Asian Society .

From 1907 he worked for the Münchmeyer Verlag in Dresden , which at the time also published the works of Karl May , as the editor of the widespread war novel series Hurray! Soldiers' pranks from war and peace , which is considered the first German series of war novels and has been imitated by numerous people. Although this series fell under the term trash, Laverrenz founded the magazine Jugendpost in 1908 , in which he opposed precisely this form of literature.
