Paul Wilhelm Schmiedel (born December 22, 1851 in Zaukeroda , Kingdom of Saxony , † April 10, 1935 in Zurich ) was a German Protestant theologian and university professor .

Life

Schmiedel studied Protestant theology in Jena from 1871 with Otto Pfleiderer and Richard Adelbert Lipsius . In 1879 he completed his habilitation and taught from 1890 to 1893 as an associate professor for the New Testament at the University of Jena . He then taught as a full professor at the University of Zurich until his retirement in 1923 . He was involved in the text-critical edition of the Novum Testamentum Graece (1927) by Erwin Nestle , as well as in the new translation of the Zurich Bible (1931).

The University of Strasbourg awarded Schmiedel an honorary doctorate in 1892 and the University of Zurich in 1921 with an honorary doctorate in philosophy .
