Paul de Ribeyre (* 1691 / 92 in Clermont ; † 10. June 1776 in Saint-Flour ) was from 1742 to 1776 Bishop of Saint-Flour .

Life

Paul de Ribeyre was born in Clermont (now Clermont-Ferrand ) in 1691 or 1692, or at least in the Diocese of Clermont . His father Paul-Antoine de Ribeyre, lord of Nébouzat, was treasurer (Trésorier de France) in Riom ; his mother was Cécile de Guerry. Paul de Ribeyre studied at the Seminary of Saint-Sulpice in Paris, received on 20 December 1711, minor orders, on April 1, 1713 the subdiaconate , on March 17, 1714, the diaconate and finally on April 2, 1718, the priestly ordination . He received his doctorate in theology at the Sorbonne on July 20, 1718 , and received from the king the Abbey of Saint-André-le-Bas in the diocese of Vienne as a commander ; In 1734 he received a canon position in his hometown and became Vicar General Massillons , with whom he worked closely and who also recommended him to Cardinal Fleury for the completed bishopric of Digne . Ribeyre received his certification dated April 2, 1742 and resigned his canon on May 7, but was transferred to Saint-Flour on May 12 and consecrated to this seat on August 12.

As bishop, Mgr Ribeyre continued the work of his teacher Massillon. He founded charities such as B. a hospital, which he financed partly from his own fortune. Annually he gave 4,000 livres to the Sisters of Mercy to be distributed to those in need. His episcopal city was also very close to his heart, and he had its entrance ("La Porte Ribeyre") redesigned for over 20,000 livres; it was destroyed in 1794 during the French Revolution . Ribeyre bequeathed 25,000 livres to the city in his will for the construction of a new school building (collège de Saint-Flour).

Mgr de Ribeyre died on June 10, 1776 after a 34-year episcopate .

Remarks

  1. The information is inconsistent. 1692 is often mentioned. Tardieu, Grand dictionnaire biographique… du Puy-de-Dôme (Moulins 1878) gives December 2, 1691.
  2. according to others on June 8th
