Pauline Krautz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pauline Krautz ( Lower Sorbian Pawlina Krawcowa ; nee Rehnus or Lower Sorbian Pawlina Renusojc ; * December 18, 1890 in Dahlitz ; † September 16, 1941 near Kolkwitz ) was a Sorbian entrepreneur.

Pauline Rehnus was the oldest of five children in a Sorbian carpenter family. Since the family lived in poor conditions, Pauline looked for work in a Cottbus cloth factory after attending primary school. In 1920 she married the cloth maker Reinhold Krautz and was now able to start an apprenticeship as a tailor, which she completed with a master craftsman examination.

In 1926 Pauline Krautz opened a shop for Wendish traditional costumes , art and flag embroidery in Cottbus . As the traditional costumes were selling less and less, she began producing costume dolls. The demand was great and she presented her dolls at exhibitions in Berlin , Dresden , Saarbrücken and Prague . In 1936 she sent a large number of costume dolls to the Olympic Games in Berlin .

When the Nazis began renaming Sorbian place and street names, Pauline Krautz protested publicly, was arrested and convicted of "insidious attacks on the state and the party". She spent several months in prison in Cottbus, after which she had to give up her business and returned to her parents' house in Kolkwitz, terminally ill. There she died at the age of 50. Her request for a sermon in Sorbian at her funeral was not granted.

In front of Pauline Krautz's former residential and commercial building on Sandower Strasse in Cottbus, a “ stumbling block ” reminds of her today .
