Paulinho , real name José Paulo Bezerra Maciel Júnior (born July 25, 1988 in São Paulo ), is a Brazilian soccer player . The midfielder plays for the Guangzhou Evergrande and the Brazilian national team .

Career

Paulinho started playing football in his hometown with Portuguesa São Paulo and then played for Pão de Açúcar EC . This awarded him to Juventus São Paulo in early 2006.

In the summer of 2006, at the age of 18, he was awarded for one year to the Lithuanian first division club FC Vilnius . There he came to his first appearance in professional football on June 29, 2006, when he was in the starting line-up in the home game and derby against Vėtra Vilnius (0-0). In total, he made 38 appearances in one year and scored five goals.

After a year he was loaned from Pão de Açúcar EC for the 2007/08 season to the Polish first division club ŁKS Łódź . There he came to 17 missions, but scored no goal.

After returning to Brazil in the summer of 2008, he was initially active for Pão de Açúcar EC before being loaned to the Brazilian second division club CA Bragantino for a year in June 2009 . There he scored six goals in 28 games.

In the summer of 2010 he was loaned out by the first division club Corinthians São Paulo . While he was mostly a substitute in the 2010 season, he was a regular from the 2011 season. In 2011, he became champion with Corinthians, he won the Copa Libertadores in 2012 and the FIFA Club World Cup in 2012 .

After good performances in the FIFA Confederations Cup 2013 , Paulinho moved to Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premier League for the 2013/14 season . There he convinced right away until he was negative in the game against Liverpool in the 0: 5 defeat when he received a red card.

In the summer of 2015, Paulinho moved to the Chinese Super League for Guangzhou Evergrande . There he met his former national coach Luiz Felipe Scolari .

In August 2017 Paulinho moved to the Spanish Primera División for FC Barcelona for 40 million euros . He signed a contract that ran until June 30, 2021, with a release clause of 120 million euros. In the 2017/18 season he developed into a regular player under coach Ernesto Valverde and contributed nine goals in 34 league appearances to win the championship. He also won the Spanish Cup, the Copa del Rey , with FC Barcelona , where he was used in six games.

In early July 2018, Paulinho returned to Guangzhou Evergrande on loan, initially. By the end of the 2018 season , he was used in 19 league games in which he scored 13 goals. In January 2019, Guangzhou Evergrande finally acquired the transfer rights to Paulinho as an option.

National team

At the beginning of September 2011 Paulinho was nominated for the first time by national coach Mano Menezes for the Brazilian national football team . On September 15, 2011, he made his debut in the national dress in the first leg of the Copa Roca against Argentina (0-0) when he was in the starting line-up.
