Paulus Severini (born between 1500 and 1510 in the Ripen district ; died in Eutin in 1569 ) was a monk and later a Protestant pastor.

Live and act

Paulus Severini's parents are not known, nor is the name of his wife. It is known that a daughter married his future successor Paul Junge.

Chroniclers of the 17th century from Eutin like the pastor Samuel Praetorius and the vice-principal Friedrich Cogel (Cogelius) wrote that Severini was a monk from Ripen who went to Wittenberg with the intention of speaking against Luther there. In the city and at its university, where he is not listed in the register , he was persuaded by Reformation views. Then he went back to his homeland and offered Christian III. to work for him. In 1535 he referred him to Bishop Detlev von Reventlow , who appointed him pastor of Eutin that same year. Here he worked as a reformer of the city until the end of his life.

Severini got into a dispute with the chapter of the collegiate monastery Eutin about the use of the Michaeliskirche and the parish income. The chapter refused entry to the church choir. During this time he was under the protection of Christian III. The new Lübeck bishop Balthasar Rantzau tried as the successor of Reventlows in 1537 to find a settlement for Eutin like the one at Schleswig Cathedral , where Catholic and Lutheran services were held in the same church. According to the will of the dean of the monastery, there were no more catholic services in Eutin in 1542.

Severini was not necessarily welcomed in Eutin as an appointed reformer, but quickly found supporters among the residents. The Great Guild, which had many members and influence, made him their vicar. From 1545 he received, like several other priests and the dean, grants from the Kalands of Eutin. He lived in a collegiate curia, although he never belonged to the chapter.

During Severini's tenure in Eutin, Lutheranism was consolidated in the city. The Protestant school founded in 1558 and a Protestant chaplain appointed in 1565 contributed to this . In 1599 a new rectory was built. This happened under the direction of Bishop Eberhard von Holle .
