Detlev von Reventlow ( Danish Ditlev ; * around 1485; † May 12, 1536 in Lübeck ) was the first Protestant bishop of Lübeck.

Life

He was the son of Joachim von Reventlow on Rixdorf and Gram (1450-1519) and his wife Armgard Buchwald von Borstel. His probably younger brother Iven (~ 1495–1568) was an advisor to several kings and dukes, bailiff and land marshal of the Schleswig-Holstein knighthood . Detlev was earmarked for the clergy, but initially studied law at the University of Rostock and obtained his bachelor's degree in 1506 .

First mentioned in the service of the Duke of Schleswig Friedrich I von Gottorf he was in 1515 as his companion to the wedding of Christian II from Denmark to Sweden. He then became the Duke's Chancellor and remained so when the Duke became King of Denmark. Together with Melchior Rantzau and Johann Rantzau , he was one of the most important advisors for Friedrich's son Christian III. In his capacity as Chancellor, he was able to conclude important contracts, for example the Bordesholm settlement between Friedrich I and Christian II in 1522 .

In 1526 he became provost of the Cistercian monastery of Reinbek and canon of Hamburg and Schleswig. At first he was an avid defender of the old faith and even traveled to Wittenberg to dispute with Martin Luther . Later he turned to Lutheranism and worked together with Johann Rantzau to introduce it. In 1529 he was a member of the Flensburg Religious Discussion , which resulted in the expulsion of Melchior Hofmann and his followers. In the same year he made sure that legal continuity was maintained during the secularization of the Reinbek monastery, since the expelled nuns officially sold the monastery property to the king.

In 1531 he became governor and negotiated with representatives of the opposing party such as Christoph von Oldenburg during and after the count's feud . After Lübeck was defeated in 1535, the Lübeck cathedral chapter chose Reventlow as the successor to the Catholic bishop Heinrich Bokholt († March 15, 1535) in order to forestall the king's interference in the election of bishops. Reventlow carried out the Reformation in the Diocese of Lübeck , but died in the spring of 1536.

His successor was the cathedral provost of Schleswig Balthasar Rantzau .
