Pavle Zablatnik ( Paul Zablatnik ; born December 4, 1912 in Fellersdorf ( Bilnjovs in Slovenian ); † May 26, 1993 in Ludmannsdorf ( Bilčovs in Slovenian ), Carinthia ) was a Slovenian Roman Catholic clergyman , cultural worker and ethnologist in Carinthia.

School and study

Pavle Zablatnik attended elementary school in Ludmannsdorf (1918–1925), then the classical grammar school in Klagenfurt (1925–1933) and graduated from 1933–1939 with a degree in theology. In 1938 he was ordained a priest . From 1946 he studied philology , classical philology and Slavic studies in Graz . He graduated in 1951 and received his doctorate in the same year with a dissertation entitled: The spiritual folk culture of the Carinthian Slovenes .

Spiritual career

Initially Pavle Zablatnik was provisional in Sankt Leonhard bei Sienenbrünn from 1938-1939 , then in Sankt Margarethen ob Töllerberg near Völkermarkt (1939-1946).

In addition to his secular work, he also looked after the parishes of Göltschach / Golšovo, St. Niklas an der Drau / Šmiklavž (1952–1956) and 1961–1972 Ottmanach / Otmanje, today in the Magdalensberg community . He was also a priest in St. Egid / Šentilj (1952–1956), Maria Gail / Marija na Zilji (1958), Sankt Johann im Rosental (1977) and in Glainach near Ferlach / Glinje pri Borovljah (1978–1993).

Worldly work

After graduating, he was a professor at the classical grammar school in Klagenfurt (1951–1957) and from 1957 to 1967 at the federal grammar school for Slovenes in Klagenfurt and its director from 1968 until his retirement in 1977. He taught Latin , Greek , Slovenian , Russian and Shorthand .

He held numerous educational lectures for teachers in the bilingual education system in Carinthia. From 1973 to 1983 he taught Slovene folklore , Slovene literature from Carinthia and didactics of the Slovene language at the Institute for Slavic Studies at the University of Klagenfurt .

He was editor of the Slovenian monthly magazine Vera in dom and the chairman of the Slovenian Christian Cultural Association ( Krščanska kulturna zveza, KKZ ) in Klagenfurt (1957-1968), Chairman of the Slovensko kulturno društvo (Slovenian Education Association) in Klagenfurt and deputy chairman of the Slovenian People's Publishing House Hermagoras / Mohorjeva (from 1981).

Pavle Zablatnik was also the spiritual father of the Slovenian ethnographic institute Urban Jarnik and worked for the Slovenian radio for over 30 years.

He was a passionate amateur filmmaker and collector of modern Slovenian art.

Awards

In 1974 Pavle Zablatnik was appointed councilor and in 1978 he was appointed clergy . In 1982 he received the carpenter's prize ( Tischlerjeva nagrada ) for his life's work , in 1982 the certificate of the Council of Carinthian Slovenes and in 1993 the Murko certificate of recognition.

Dr. In his ethnographic work, Zablatnik devoted himself to the customs of life, the seasons, folk magic, folk poetry and the folk theater of the Carinthian Slovenes . He published numerous popular science and scientific articles. He wrote the fundamental scientific works Od zibelke do groba (From the cradle to the grave) and Ljudska verovanja, šege in navade na Koroškem (Folk beliefs, customs and habits in Carinthia) (Celovec, 1984). He also created a Slovene textbook for Latin lessons and a Slovene reader for the upper level of high school.

He was deeply committed to preserving and promoting the Slovene language. His work was of central importance for the preservation of the Slovene language and culture in Carinthia.
