Pavol Dobšinský

Pavol Dobšinský (born March 15, 1828 in Slavošovce , Austrian Empire , now Slovakia ; † October 22, 1885 in Drienčany , Austria-Hungary , now Slovakia) was a Slovak Protestant pastor, poet, collector of Slovak oral traditions and writer of the Štúr generation .

Life

Pavol Dobšinský was born in the family of a Protestant pastor and studied at the high schools in Rosenau and Miskolc . From 1840 he then attended a Protestant lyceum in Leutschau , which he successfully completed in 1850. He was professor of the Slovak language and literature in Schemnitz from 1858–1861 , before he finally worked as a pastor in Drienčany from 1861 until his death.

Dobšinský is best known for its role in collecting and editing Slovak oral tradition. However, he was also a poet, translator of romantic poets ( Lord Byron and Mickiewicz ) as well as the classics of world literature ( Shakespeare , Rousseau ) and literary critic.
