history
Drienčany was first mentioned in writing in 1291 as Drenchen , but it was built on the site of an older settlement in the centuries before that. The village was the estate of the Derencsény family , who had a castle built near Drienčany (first written mention in 1297). The resulting dominion comprised the upper reaches of Blh and Západný Turiec . Around the middle of the 16th century, the village was ravaged by Ottoman troops, while the castle went under at the end of the 17th century. It was not until the 18th century that the inhabitants returned to Drienčany. In 1828 there were 74 houses and 580 inhabitants who were employed as basket makers, farmers and cattle keepers.
Until 1918/19, the place in Gemer and Kleinhont counties belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.
