Číž (until 1948 Slovak "Číz"; Hungarian Csíz ) is a municipality and health resort with 682 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the Okres Rimavská Sobota within the Banskobystrický kraj in Slovakia .

Reformed Church in Číž

The place is located in the eastern part of the southern Slovak basin on the Teška brook, which flows south of the place into the Rimava , which in turn flows into the Slaná after a few kilometers . The town of Rimavská Sobota is about 25 kilometers to WNW and the town of Tornaľa is about 20 kilometers to the north.

The municipality is divided into the districts Číž and Číž-kúpele.

history

Číž was mentioned for the first time in a document in 1274 as Chyz and belonged to the Thuka family , later to various lesser nobles. In 1860 iodine and bromine sources were discovered here, from which a health resort developed. Here high blood pressure, musculoskeletal disorders and vascular diseases are treated.

population

According to the 2011 census, there were 666 inhabitants in Číž, including 417 Magyars, 167 Slovaks, 27 Roma, three Czechs, two Jews and one Ukrainian. 49 residents gave no information in this regard. 293 residents committed themselves to the Roman Catholic Church, 161 residents to the Reformed Church, 31 residents to the Evangelical Church AB, six residents to the Evangelical Methodist Church, two residents each to the Jehovah's Witnesses and to the Jewish community and one resident to the Orthodox Church. 71 residents had no denomination and 99 residents had no denomination.
