Rimavské Brezovo (Hungarian Rimabrézó - until 1907 Rimabrezó ) is a small town on the south center of Slovakia with 530 inhabitants (December 31, 2019), in the Rimavská Sobota District , a circle of kraj Banskobystrický lies and landscape Gemer counted becomes.

The community is located in the Slovak Ore Mountains , more precisely in its lower part Revúcka vrchovina ( Rauschenbacher Bergland ), mostly on the right bank of the Rimava . The center of the village is at an altitude of 275  m nm and is 20 kilometers from Rimavská Sobota .

Neighboring municipalities are Hnúšťa in the north, Kyjatice in the northeast, Babinec and Kraskovo in the southeast and Rimavská Baňa in the south and west.

history

Protestant church

The place was first mentioned in writing in 1334 as Brezou , at that time as an estate of the Bishop of Kalocsa in the historic Kleinhont region, for a long time the exclave of the Hont County . In the 15th century he came to the Hajnáčka castle estate , and from the 17th century onwards, various small nobility took turns. A glassworks worked here in the 18th century, and an ironworks was founded in 1770, which was taken over by the Rimamurány company in the 19th century and closed in 1881. In 1828 there were 65 houses and 503 inhabitants who not only lived from agriculture, but also worked in the local industrial plants.

Until 1918, the place in Gemer and Kleinhont counties belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia and Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, Rimavské Brezovo had 557 inhabitants, of whom 473 were Slovaks, five Magyars, two Czechs and one German and one Roma each; two residents stated a different ethnic group. 73 residents did not provide any information. 281 residents committed to the Roman Catholic Church, 92 residents to the Evangelical Church AB, three residents to the Evangelical Methodist Church and one resident each to the Greek Catholic Church and the Reformed Church; one resident professed a different denomination. 95 inhabitants were without a denomination and the denomination of 83 inhabitants was not determined.
