Širkovce (until 1927 Slovak "Žirkovce"; Hungarian Serke ) is a municipality in the south-center of Slovakia with 977 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), which lies in the Okres Rimavská Sobota , a district of the Banskobystrický kraj , and is part of the Gemer region is counted.
geography
The municipality is located in the southwestern part of the Rimavská kotlina basin , part of the larger southern Slovak basin on the right bank of the Rimava and near the Hungarian border. Smaller foothills of the Cerová vrchovina mountain range extend into the municipality. The center of the village is at an altitude of 183 m nm and is 15 kilometers from Rimavská Sobota .
Neighboring communities are Jesenské in the west and north, Bottovo and very briefly Dubovec in the north-east, Šimonovce in the south-east and Drňa and Hostice in the south.
history
The place was first mentioned in writing as Sirque in 1264 , the same year as the castle on a 378 m high mountain west of Širkovce. The castle was the ancestral seat of the Ratold family and their descendants Lórantfy and went under during the Turkish Wars of the 16th century. In 1427 the village below the castle had a total of 64 portals . In the 16th and 17th centuries it belonged to the Rákóczi family and families from the lower nobility. After the Turkish wars, there was a renewed settlement in the 18th century. In 1828 there were 131 houses and 969 inhabitants who lived from agriculture.
Until 1918, the place in Gemer and Kleinhont County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia, or now Slovakia. From 1938 to 1944 he was again in Hungary because of the First Vienna Arbitration .
population
According to the 2011 census, Širkovce had 936 inhabitants, including 495 Magyars, 319 Roma and 89 Slovaks. 33 residents gave no answer. 417 residents supported the Reformed Church, 349 residents the Roman Catholic Church, eight residents the Evangelical Church AB, three residents the Greek Catholic Church and two residents the Evangelical Methodist Church. Ten residents had no denomination and the denomination of 147 residents was not determined.

Širkovce can be reached by a junction of the 2nd order street 571 ( Fiľakovo –Jesenské– Kráľ ), the connection to Rimavská Sobota is the 2nd order street 531 in Jesenské. The next train station is also in Jesenské on the Bánréve– railway line. Fiľakovo and the Jesenské – Tisovec railway line .
