Kaloša (Hungarian Kálosa ) is a municipality in the center of Slovakia with 830 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), which is located in the Okres Rimavská Sobota , a district of the Banskobystrický kraj , and is part of the Gemer region .
geography
The municipality is located in the Rimavská kotlina basin (part of Juhoslovenská kotlina ) south of the Slovak Ore Mountains on the middle course of the Kaloša river. The center of the village is at an altitude of 175 m nm and is 12 kilometers from Tornaľa and 23 kilometers from Rimavská Sobota .
Neighboring municipalities are Gemerské Michalovce in the north, Otročok in the northeast, Žiar in the east, Figa in the south, Barca and Dulovo in the southwest and Rakytník in the west.
history
Today's municipality was created in 1964 through the merger of the previously independent municipality Nižná Kaloša (until 1948 "Nižná Káloša", until 1927 also "Dolné Kálošovo"; Hungarian Alsókálosa ) and Vyšná Kaloša (until 1948, "Vyšná Káloša", until 1927 "Horn." “; Hungarian Felsőkálosa ).
The older district is Nižná Kaloša, which was first mentioned in writing in 1247 as Calysa and was founded shortly after the devastating Mongol invasion . In 1427 the place belonged to the Korláth family , from the middle of the 15th century to other families. In 1683 Nižná Kaloša was devastated by a Polish-Lithuanian army. In 1828 there were 58 houses and 453 residents who were employed as farmers.
Vyšná Kaloša was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1427 and was created at the end of the 15th century when it was separated from the original place. At the beginning of the 16th century, part of the village came under the ownership of the Lórántffy family . In 1683 Vyšná Kaloša was devastated by a Polish-Lithuanian army. In 1828 there were 17 houses and 140 inhabitants who were employed as farmers.
Until 1918/1919, the places in Gemer and Kleinhont counties belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia and now Slovakia. Between 1938 and 1944 they once again belonged to Hungary on the basis of the First Vienna Arbitration .

According to the 2011 census, Kaloša had 735 inhabitants, 484 of them Magyars and 103 Slovaks . 97 Roma and three Czechs . 48 residents gave no information on ethnicity .
515 residents committed to the Roman Catholic Church, 107 residents to the Reformed Church, two residents to the Evangelical Church AB and one resident each to the Jehovah's Witnesses and to the Greek Catholic Church. 57 inhabitants were without a denomination and the denomination of 52 inhabitants was not determined.
