Vyšný Skálnik (until 1927 Slovak and "Skálnok"; Hungarian Felsősziklás - until 1907 Felsőszkálnok ) is a municipality in the middle of Slovakia with 142 inhabitants (December 31, 2019), in the Rimavská Sobota District of, a circle kraj Banskobystrický lies and is counted as part of the Gemer landscape .

geography

The municipality is located on the southern edge of the Slovak Ore Mountains , more precisely on the southern edge of its subunit Revúcka vrchovina in the Rimava valley . The center of the village is at an altitude of 243  m nm and is 12 kilometers from Rimavská Sobota .

Neighboring municipalities are Rimavské Zalužany and Kraskovo in the north, Nižný Skálnik in the east and south, Hrachovo in the west and Kociha in the northwest.

history

The place was created in the 14th century by outsourcing from neighboring Nižný Skálnik and was first mentioned in writing in 1334 as Zkalnuk . In 1456 both places were known together as Zkalnok utraque . The landowners of Ožany exercised feudal rule for centuries. In 1828 there were 30 houses and 222 residents who were employed as carters, peddlers and potters, among other things. In the 19th century there was a marble quarry near the place.

Until 1918/1919, the place in Gemer and Kleinhont counties belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

population

According to the 2011 census, 155 inhabitants lived in Vyšný Skálnik, including 148 Slovaks and one Czech . Six residents did not provide any information about their ethnicity .

101 residents committed to the Roman Catholic Church, 22 residents to the Evangelical Church AB and one resident each to the Jehovah's Witnesses and one to the Greek Catholic Church. 20 residents were without a denomination and the denomination was not determined for 10 residents.
