Chanava , Hungarian Hanva (until 1927 Slovak and "Hanava") is a municipality in the middle of Slovakia with 705 inhabitants (December 31, 2019), in the Rimavská Sobota District of, a circle kraj Banskobystrický lies and landscape Gemer counted becomes.

The community is located in the Rimavská kotlina basin (part of Juhoslovenská kotlina ), on the Slaná corridor terrace. The center of the village is at an altitude of 175  m nm and is 12 kilometers from Tornaľa and 30 kilometers from Rimavská Sobota .

Neighboring municipalities are Rumince in the north, Včelince and Štrkovec in the northeast, Riečka and Kráľ in the east, Abovce in the southeast, Lenartovce in the south, Číž and Rimavská Seč in the southwest, Ivanice in the west and Barca in the northwest.

history

Chanava was first mentioned in writing as Honua in 1266 and was built around a monastery that went under in the 16th century. The village was owned by the local Hanvay family , and from the 16th century also by the Darvas family . In 1828 there were 117 houses and 1,352 inhabitants who were employed as farmers and winemakers.

Until 1918/1919, the place in Gemer and Kleinhont counties belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. Between 1938 and 1944 it belonged again to Hungary on the basis of the First Vienna Arbitration .

population

According to the 2011 census, 735 people lived in Chanava, including 616 Magyars , 55 Slovaks and 24 Roma . 15 residents did not provide any information on ethnicity .

377 residents supported the Reformed Church, 245 residents the Roman Catholic Church, 23 residents the Evangelical Church AB, 15 residents the Jehovah's Witnesses and one resident each for the Greek Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church. 32 residents had no denomination and the denomination of 16 residents was not determined.
