Čerenčany (Hungarian Cserencsény ) is a municipality in the center of Slovakia with 571 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), which is in the Okres Rimavská Sobota , a district of the Banskobystrický kraj , and is part of the Gemer region .

Street in town

The municipality is located on the southern edge of the Slovak Ore Mountains , at the transition to the southern Slovak basin , in the Rimava valley . The center of the village is at an altitude of 215  m nm and is five kilometers from Rimavská Sobota .

Neighboring communities are Veľké Teriakovce (district Malé Teriakovce ) in the north, Rimavská Sobota (districts Vyšná Pokoradz and Rimavská Sobota) in the east and south and again Veľké Teriakovce in the west.

history

Country estate

Čerenčany was first mentioned in writing in 1334 as a property of the Archdiocese of Kalocsa as Cherenchen . In the 15th century the village was part of the Hajnáčka Castle , later it was owned by various landlords. In 1828 there were 34 houses and 295 inhabitants who were employed as coopers, farmers and potters, and in the 19th century also as gardeners.

Until 1918/1919, the place in Gemer and Kleinhont counties belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. After 1918, the inhabitants worked in agriculture on the local large estate, which was nationalized after the Second World War.

population

According to the 2011 census, there were 550 inhabitants in Čerenčany, including 459 Slovaks , 20 Magyars , three Czechs and one each from Moravia , from Poland and from Rome . 65 inhabitants did not provide any information on ethnicity .

260 residents committed to the Roman Catholic Church, 64 residents to the Evangelical Church AB, seven residents to the Reformed Church, two residents to the Jehovah's Witnesses and one resident each to the Evangelical Methodist Church and one to the Greek Catholic Church; two residents professed a different denomination. 133 residents had no denomination and 80 residents had no denomination.

traffic

Half a kilometer west of the village, the 1st order road 72 (section Rimavská Sobota– Brezno ) passes . On the eastern edge of the village there is a stop on the Jesenské – Tisovec railway line .
