Pedro Hernaez

Pedro Conlu Hernaez (born December 12, 1899 in Talisay , Negros Occidental province ; † June 21, 1978 ) was a Filipino politician of the Nacionalista Party who was a senator between 1941 and 1947 .

Life

Degree, Entrepreneur, and Congressman

After attending the Talisay Public School and secondary education at San Agustin College of Iloilo, Hernaez completed an undergraduate degree at San Juan de Letran College , from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). He completed a subsequent postgraduate study of law at the Escuela de Derecho in 1921 with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) and then took up a position as a lawyer in Manila after being admitted to the bar . A short time later, however, he returned to his home province of Negros Occidental to open a law firm there. At the same time he founded sugar cane plantations and sugar manufacturing companies and was President of the Talisay-Silay Sugar Planters Association and a member of the Con Federacion de Azucareros y Agriculture's de Caña Dulce for three years .

Hernaez began his political engagement when he was elected to the Constitutional Convention as a delegate of the second constituency of Negros Occidental in 1934 . In this he was a member of the committees for the official language, for agricultural development as well as for nationalization and preservation of the lands and natural resources.

Bach founding the Commonwealth of the Philippines , Hernaez was elected a member of the first Commonwealth Congress in 1935 and again represented the second constituency of his home province from November 25, 1935 to August 15, 1938. In 1938 he became a member of the second Commonwealth Congress, to which he belonged from January 24, 1939 to January 16, 1941. During his tenure in Congress, he chaired the Committee on Banks and Corporations and was a member of the Impeachment, Agriculture, Franchise, and Ways and Means Committees.

Senator and Minister of Commerce and Industry

In the Senate elections of November 11, 1941, Hernaez was elected Senator as a candidate of the Nacionalista Party under the leadership of Manuel Roxas . He was a member of the Senate for a six-year electoral term until 1947.

In the Senate elections of November 8, 1949, he ran for the Nacionalista Party for one of the eight Senate seats to be awarded. However, with 1,025,342 votes (28.6 percent), he only reached 15th place among the 24 candidates and was consequently not re-elected Senator.

In 1957, Hernaez was appointed Minister for Trade and Industry in his cabinet by President Carlos P. Garcia and was a member of this until 1960.

Hernaez was married to Encarnacion de la Rama. From this marriage two daughters were born.
