Peggy Herbison

Margaret "Peggy" McCrorie Herbison (* 11. March 1907 in Shotts , Lanarkshire , Scotland , † 29. December 1996 in Lanark , South Lanarkshire , Scotland) was a British politician of the Labor Party , which from 1945 to 1970 member of the House ( House of Commons ) and was Minister several times.

Life

Margaret "Peggy" McCrorie Herbison, daughter of miners John Herbison and Maria Jane McCrorie, began studying English at the University of Glasgow after attending Dykehead Primary School and Bellshill Academy , which she received in 1928 with a Master of Arts ( MA Honors). She then worked as a teacher. After the Labor Party's victory in the general election on October 15, 1964 , she became Minister of Pensions and National Insurance in the Wilson I cabinet on October 18, 1964, and held this position until she was renamed Minister of Social Security (Minister of Social Security) on 21 October 1964 she became a member of the secret Privy Council on August 6, 1966. In 1970 the University of Glasgow also awarded her an honorary doctorate in law (Honorary LL.D.) . On December 10, 1974, she was also a member of a Royal Commission chaired by Cyril Salmon, Baron Salmon , which dealt with the investigation of corruption in central government and local authorities as well as in other public administration.
