Pekka Niemelä (* 1974 in Helsinki ) is a former Finnish ski jumper and today's ski jumping trainer. He was the coach of the Finnish World Cup team and the Turkish team.
Career
As a jumper
Niemelä made his debut on March 3, 1991 in Lahti in the World Cup. He achieved his best result on February 28, 1996 in Kuopio when he finished 40th. He also won silver at the Junior World Championship in Reit im Winkl in 1991 with the team that included the previous Finnish head coach Janne Väätäinen .
As a trainer
The Finn started his work as a trainer in 1997. He first worked as a base trainer at Puijon Hiihtoseura in Kuopio , where he trained with his assistant Ari-Pekka Nikkola, among others Matti Hautamäki , Janne Happonen and Toni Nieminen . From 2001 he was coach of the Finnish B-team, Northern Finland area.
Even beyond his engagement in Finland, namely until 2003, he was Matti Hautamäki's exercise bike. Niemelä led him to Olympic silver with the team and bronze in the individual at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and to the ski flying world record in 2003. In 2002, he led his protégé Janne Happonen to win the Junior World Championships both individually and in a team.
After the end of the 2001/2002 season, Niemelä left the Finnish Ski Association for Japan, where he signed a four-year contract as the coach of Team Tsuchiya . There he worked with Topi Sarparanta, among others, with athletes such as Daiki Itō , Kazuya Yoshioka and Noriaki Kasai as well as the combiner Daito Takahashi . According to his own statements, his engagement was initially characterized by language problems.
In May 2006, Niemelä then signed a contract to train the French national ski jumping team. He was responsible for the A and B squad as well as the junior team, together with his assistant coach Remy Trachsel. To work with his athletes, he commuted between his hometown Kuopio and the French bases. In March 2010 his move to Finland was announced. There he works as head coach. Especially during the 2012/2013 World Cup season , there was considerable criticism of Niemelä, as the Finnish team was unable to free itself from a deep performance gap.
On July 16, 2014, Niemelä became the head coach of the Turkish ski jumping team. He resigned from this office in autumn 2018.
Private
Niemelä is married to Minna. They have two sons, Nicolas and Robert.
